To Modify Default Attribute Values for a Feature Type

The Attributes page of the Placement Defaults dialog box is used to modify default attribute values for feature types. The new defaults will be applied only to the current design if you access the dialog box while working in the Design Assistant. The defaults will be applied to the entire job default if you access the dialog box while working in the Job Default Assistant.

If you change the value of a global attribute, the global attribute value is overridden and the attribute becomes a feature attribute. For information about overriding global attribute values for all features while working with a design, see Overriding the Global Attribute Values of an Active Job Default.

The Attributes page also indicates whether any compatible units match the feature's attributes. Clicking the check box for a unit will assign the unit automatically when the feature is assigned. Any check mark that appears dimmed indicates that only one unit matches the feature type exactly.

  1. With the Features Catalog displayed in the Design Assistant, double-click the feature type whose attribute values you want to specify. Note: If you are modifying the default attribute values of a feature type for a job default, select the folder of the feature type on the Features page of the Job Default Assistant and then choose Feature Properties from the Job Defaults menu. Or right-click the folder and choose Feature Properties from the shortcut menu.
  2. Click the attribute value that you want to edit and select a new value from the list. Note: Attributes that take their values from a global attribute are indicated by a special icon. Overriding a global attribute value may cause placement conflicts if certain business rules are enabled. Click Yes to confirm a change to a global attribute value. Note: Linked attributes are designated with a special icon. Changing the default value of a linked attribute will affect the feature only when it is subsequently placed in the active design. Links to existing features in the design will not be updated.
  3. To pin a compatible unit to the feature type, select the preferred unit from the Compatible Unit Matches list. Note: A pinned unit will be automatically assigned as a default when the feature type is assigned with this job default. For more information, see Pinning Compatible Units to Feature Types in a Job Default.
  4. Click OK.
